Interview Questions : One Wrong Move

Hello, Crystal Reads! Thanks for having me on your blog!

How did you come up with the title?

I didn’t! It was chosen for me! The title I was using was “Secret Heat,” but the powers that be decided that it didn’t have enough pop. I thought it sounded, well, secretive, and hot. But that’s just me. And there really are too many “heat” and “hot” books. My critique partner teased at one point, calling it “Hot Heat,” which encapsulates everything that is ridiculous and overheated (sorry!) about romance titles

What was your favorite part about writing a novel?

My favorite part is, strangely, also my least favorite part! Watch out, I’m about to egregiously contradict myself. It’s exciting, at the beginning, when the book can be anything, it can go anywhere, it might be brilliant, the best thing you’ve ever written, a runaway bestseller to garner me fame, riches and love forevermore . . . and at the same time, it could end up being a dud, a series of bad choices that fall totally flat, a disaster, a career killer. Yikes! My other favorite part, (which, not surprisingly, is my other LEAST favorite part) is at the end, where those decisions are made, for good and ill, and you’re just racing desperately for the conclusion with your heart in your mouth and your deadline breathing fire down your neck. That’s stimulating, to say the least. At the end of a book, my glands must be dumping something similar to amphetamines into my body, because I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, my mind races, I can’t concentrate on anything but the book. My family does not enjoy that phase.  Not much laundry gets done. No help with the homework, no cookies or muffins or pancakes. It’s cold cereal time, my lovies.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Interesting question. No one has ever put it quite that way. Yes, I think there is a message—but it’s not a message that is grasped by the mind so much as by the heart, the guts, the glands. It’s an emotional journey, and what you take away from it is very real, but still hard to describe, because feelings are intangible and fleeting. I guess, the message is about the triumph of love, but to my mind, that sounds overly simplistic, and kind of dumb. But after a juicy romance novel that does what it’s supposed to do, it doesn’t feel dumb at all. Not to the rest of me.

What books have influenced your life most?

The ones that most influenced my life are the ones I remember from my childhood, the really formative books. The Secret Garden, the Little Princess, The Little House books, Tolkien, Anne of Green Gables, The Singing Tree. The fairy tales of the brothers Grimm, of Andersen, of Perrault. Then Bronte and Austen, of course. Georgette Heyer. Gone with the Wind, Robert Herbert, Ann McCaffrey (the dragonriders of Pern, oh yes!). And I read a whole lot of Barbara Cartland novels. In fact, my family used to tease me when they saw me on the couch reading those little books, and they’d point to the photo of Dame Barbara on the back, reclining on her chaise in a sequined evening gown, dripping with diamonds, petting her Pekinese, or was it a toy poodle? That’s gonna be you, babe, they warned. I looked at the jewels, the evening gown, and thought, huh. Doesn’t look so bad to me. The joke’s on them. All that time wasted was actually research!  I don’t have the jewels or the evening gown or the Pekinese, but I sure am grateful to have a career in writing stories—and I’m sure Dame Barbara has something to do with that!

What are your current projects?

I’m writing Miles’s book! As yet untitled, and I’m having great fun with it. Miles is really taking me by surprise. He jumped out of ONE WRONG MOVE demanding his own point of view scenes, the way that Aaro did in BLOOD AND FIRE, which clearly indicated to me that it’s time, for Miles. Past time.

Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members?

My marvelous and talented critique partner, Lisa Marie Rice! I don’t know what I would do without her. She reads every scene as I write it, and tells me if I’m veering off course, God bless her. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Keeping the boundaries firm around my writing time is incredibly hard for me. So is trying to push past the constant fear of being stupid, boring and repetitive. That is really hard. Sitting and staring at that damn computer for hours and hours on end, that’s hard. Being alone so much of the time is hard. And yet, I’m still so grateful.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Keep at it! Remember that the opinions of the people reading the slush pile are totally random and arbitrary. Remember that many people recently have self-published their rejected manuscripts and made real money at it. Some huge piles of money. Some, a decent living. Some, their gas or grocery money. All of those options are fine. I would congratulate them for attempting something so hard and uncertain, and putting it out there for the world to judge. They are heroes, to be brave enough to do that. And I salute them for it.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I want to say, thank you, for receiving my stories and making them part of your imaginary landscape. What a strange and crazy miracle that is, that I have met hardly any of you in person, and yet we all have this intimate connection. I am honored to have been read by you all.

What are your expectations for the book?

Other than working my butt off to bring the book into existence, I try not to have any expectations at all. Maybe it would be more accurate to say ‘what are my hopes for the book.’ Seems presumptuous to have expectations, almost like I’m asking for trouble. I hope all you lovely readers like it. I hope it reaches new readers and introduces them to the series. I hope it makes the lists, garners good reviews. I’ve already done all I can—other than the required self-promo, like this blog tour! (By the way, thank you again so much, Crystal Reads, for letting me do my thing on your blog!)

Here is a fun one! If you could choose one food item, to eat for the rest of your life what would it be?

That’s hard! Just one? Does a bacon avocado tomato cheeseburger count? I guess that’s cheating, because we’re talking six foods, including the toasted bun, and not including the thick crunchy slice of sweet onion and the special sauce. Can you tell I’m a helpless foodie? Nostalgic, too, because Italy is no place for a burger.  So I guess I’ll pick . . . pizza! (That is one thing about which I cannot complain . . . it’s so wonderful here.) So I’ll specify—southern Italian pizza. With the freshly made dough, super fresh tomato sauce, excellent fresh mozzarella, the wood-burning stone oven to give it that smoky zing—stop, Shannon, stop!
